Sebadoh
“Ocean”
Live in Sydney 1995

Apparently Sebadoh will be touring in support of reissues of their very best albums Bakesale and Harmacy later this year. I am very excited about this. “Ocean” is a notable part of my adolescence. There was a time when “Ocean” was very close to how I felt about a specific person. I am slightly embarrassed about that now, but whatever. It’s a terrific song.

Yeah, love this song, and these are my two favorite records by them as well (like Bakesale quite a bit more though). There’s a couplet in this song I really like, but that also sounds like it’s ripped from a self-help book:

I wish I had a way to make it better
to re-arrange the world and make you smile
it’s dumb to even think I had that power
we haven’t been that close in a while

This whole song sounds like it was written by someone doing a lot of self-reflection and possibly talking regularly to a psychologist, which from one perspective might seem hokey but which I’ve always found very charming. I can sense someone struggling to understand the world here, seems like he’s working at it, I like hearing the effort.
